Love notes” are home-made affirmation cards that we have integrated in to our work with transgender youth. We make the cards with card stock, markers, paper punches, decorative tape, colored pencils, and water colors. We use quotes, song lyrics, and other messages and images to inspire us to be our best selves and believe in ourselves. In addition to making cards for ourselves, we make them for others—people we know and people we don’t know. We set up a table to make “love notes” at the 2016 Philadelphia Trans Health Conference in June, inviting passers-by to make a card for someone else and take a care that someone already made. Dr. Hillier leads a weekly group at the Attic focused on making these cards and enjoys brining this activity to various groups and meetings.
These cards are designed to be read, sung or shouted out loud to celebrate the most potent force we have to protect ourselves against doubt, hate and fear: our love for ourselves. Share, trade or make your own love notes. Put them on your desk, in your lunchbox, under your pillow, on your mirror. Find your voice, step into your power, embrace your magnificence because the world needs all of your gifts.
